To book an arena, you’ve got to be pretty special. Whenever I shoot an arena show I’m always stunned at the caliber of the talent. It’s always unexpected, a surprise.
Interestingly, as a matter of course, concert photographers are usually allowed first three songs of the set to photograph. This short window of time magnifies the quirks and details and it’s affects, of the talent. Lightning in a bottle that’s conjured up again and again for each performance of the singular tour. Anti-climaxes occurring because THERE WAS a climax, and each anti-climax fueling the build up to the next climax. In a performance, you see and hear them fire off: pop, pop, pop.
As photographers, we aim to capture the pops, the climaxes.
What’s stunning is how by the time an artist is playing arenas, they have finely tuned their capacity to deliver a constant stream of climaxes, without pause.
And that’s what we had here. Lightening in a bottle transmitted to the thousands and thousands of fans at PNC Arena in Raleigh.
