On Netflix, I stumbled upon a very well done documentary. It’s called “The Sparks Brothers”. Do a search for Sparks on Netflix and you’ll find it.
Soon after I watched that, I found out they were playing at the Lincoln Theater in downtown Raleigh. I haven’t been there for a few years, but I seemed to remember it was best to get there early to get a good spot to photograph from. Google says the house holds up to 750 standing and up to 350 seated (and partially seated?! ). In any case they were sold out. Packed in pretty tight. Fortunately I got there an hour and a half before they went on, so I had gotten a sweet spot. The important key here is not to drink anything 4 hours before the show so you can stay at that sweet spot, and I’m happy to say all went well. While I’m yammering here, I’ll just mention that there is public parking right across the street, and they’re reasonable.
Sparks were absolutely phenomenal. The two brothers Russel Mael / vocals and Ron Mael / Keyboards – offer something you might call sophisticated electronic art pop and for this performance were backed by a full band. But you just can’t pigeon hole them into any genre. You gotta watch the documentary. Try not to miss them. This is a great show! Hurry! Get there early!
